Remembering the Victims

Everyone on this page was a friend, a child, a grandchild, a sibling – a person.

They are loved and remembered – both those who lost their lives to being shot by Prinsloo guns, those who survived their wounds.

Dillan Cornelius
 

Shot and killed: 10 August 2013 (16 years old)
 

Dillan had just returned to Manenberg, after being sent to live in a rural village in fear of his safety. Dillan had witnessed the stabbing and subsequent death of one of his friends at Phoenix High, leading to him moving to the Vredendal on the West Coast.

A short time after his return, Dillan was walking home after visiting his friends when a fight with an older man took a turn for the worst. The man left and returned with a gun, shooting Dillan in the arm, leg and abdomen. Dillan died later that day at GF Jooste Hospital.

Dudley Richards
 

Shot and Killed: 2 December 2013 (17 years old)
 

Dudley was 17 and living with his grandmother in Tafelsig, Mitchell’s Plain, working as a coach and taxi driver.His mother worked and lived in Johannesburg at the time. Dudley was shot at point blank range on the 2nd of December 2013, and he never got to see his 18th birthday.

Lukas Dirks
 

Shot and killed: 25 January 2015 (18 years old)
 

Lukas Dirks was sitting on the pavement outside of his house when he was shot, along with the two friends he had been sitting wit. One died on the scene, and Lukas died on the way to the hospital. Lukas was only 18 and had been the family breadwinner for about a year before his death.

Mansoer Eksteen
 

Shot and injured: 13 October 2014 (age 44)

Mansoer was standing in the garden of his own home when he was shot in the chest. The attacker then entered the home and shot his mother. Mansoer was unable to attend his own mother’s funeral as he was in hospital recovering from his own wounds.

Niezaam Cupido
 

Shot and injured: March 2014

Niezaam was 16 at the time he was shot in a gang-related shooting while buying snacks at the shop. Niezaam was shot 9 times after trying to get kids out of the way of the violence and being chased by the gang members with guns. He survived his injuries, relying heavily on his family while recovering, and forever being impacted by his trauma.

Shot and injured: 17 September 2012 (age 7)

In 2012, Lian Davids was playing in the street outside of his house with his friend Leeana when they were caught in the crossfire between two men shooting at each other across the road. Liam survived his injuries but his life was changed: he struggled psychologically and at school, eventually dropping out. The trauma of his shooting has never left him.

Six year old Leeana was playing outside her home in Hanover Park with her friend Liam, when the two were caught in crossfire. Leeana spent a month in a medically induced coma, and her speech and sight were impacted by the injury.

Mogamat Moeneer and Mogamat Nazeer Julies
 

In October 2014, brothers Mogamat Moeneer and Mogamat Nazeer (3 and 2 at the time) were visiting their grandparents home in Mitchell’s Plain with their mother. When walking home, the three of them were caught in crossfire from a car that drove past while they were in an alley. Miraculously both boys survived their wounds, though Nazeer had entered into a coma from the severity of his.
